SKYCITY Northern Knights Look to Back-To-Back Wins
5th February, 2014

The SKYCITY Northern Knights will look to continue their climb up the Plunket Shield ladder against Wellington on Friday after their incredible 310 run victory in Gisborne over ladder leaders the Canterbury Wizards.

After setting Canterbury 383 for victory, the SKYCITY Northern Knights routed the Wizards for just 73 on the final day with BLACKCAP leggie Ish Sodhi claiming a career-best 5/29.

The SKYCITY Northern Knights now sit in fourth place with three games to go, just 11 points from second, and 18 from top.  A maximum of 20 points gain be achieved in any match.  With all three of its matches against teams placed second and third results are highly likely, giving the Knights the chance to rise further.

With the BLACKCAPS Test squad playing India starting Thursday in Auckland, the SKYCITY Northern Knights lose the services of Trent Boult, BJ Watling and Ish Sodhi from the team that defeated Canterbury.  Also in the BLACKCAPS squad, to make six of the twelve, are Knights Kane Williamson, Corey Anderson and Tim Southee.

Replacing Boult, Watling and Sodhi for Wellington are Jonathan Boult, James Baker, and debutant Rory Christopherson.

Christopherson is a 25 year old wicket-keeper from Northland.  He has played ND ‘A’ cricket during the last two seasons after relocating to Northland from Auckland.

He is a very accomplished gloveman and a determined lower order batsman who has opened for Northland on occasions.

The hard-luck story is young contracted wicket-keeper Cameron Fletcher who has waited patiently behind BJ Watling for the majority of the season for an opportunity.  He is set to undergo surgery on a finger that never recovered after he hurt it in round three of the Plunket Shield.  The surgery is likely to rule him out for the remainder of the summer.

The SKYCITY Northern Knights were buoyed again by the performances of its young batsman in the most recent Plunket Shield encounter.  The future is looking exceedingly bright with Joe Carter (21 years old) making 64, Bharat Popli (23) compiling 82 and Mitchell Santner (21) registering his debut century (118) in their only innings for the match.

The match begins Friday at Wellington’s Karori Park.
